What it is
Heart rate is the baseline signal behind most other cardio metrics. It moves constantly with activity, stress and posture.
How Apple measures it
Apple Watch measures it optically at the wrist every few minutes at rest and continuously during workouts.
What's a normal range?
Resting values are usually 60 to 100 bpm for adults, and exertion pushes it much higher depending on age.
What moves it

- Caffeine
- Stress

What is a normal heart rate by age?
At rest, most adults are 60 to 100 bpm. Maximum heart rate during exercise falls with age, roughly 220 minus your age as a rough estimate.
Why does my Apple Watch heart rate look wrong?
A loose band, tattoos or movement can disrupt the optical sensor. Wear the watch snug and a finger-width above the wrist bone.
